Experience the Bard outdoors at San Anton Gardens
MADC is this year continuing its longstanding annual tradition of performing a Shakespeare play outdoors, in the heart of the exquisite San Anton Gardens, against the backdrop of the President’s Palace.
This year’s production, The Taming of the Shrew, features a well-known cast who will tell the much-loved story in a new and unexpected way, whilst remaining true to the text written by the Bard himself.
The titular ‘Shrew’, Katherina, is a high-spirited young lady known for her sharp tongue and searing wit, who her mother has decreed must first be married, before her much more charming and beautiful younger sister Bianca may be married to any one of her many admirers. Enter Petruchio, who decides to try to ‘tame’ Katherina, amongst other hilarious mishaps as Bianca’s suitors also close in on her.
MADC’s production of this classic tale will bring it home to Malta, as it explores the ‘play-within-a-play’ idea that was first introduced by Shakespeare himself in the original manuscript.
In this, we meet a parallel MADC, which is made up of amateur actors who live in the fictitious town of Mazbugg, as it prepares to present the play as part of the town’s Festa celebrations.
This unique production of The Taming of the Shrew will once again make full use of its surroundings in the beautiful and expansive San Anton Gardens in Attard, where audiences can enjoy the story under the night sky, amidst the atmospheric greenery and against the imposing architecture of the President’s Palace.
‘The Taming of the Shrew’ will take place at San Anton Gardens in Attard from 14 to 23 July. Tickets are available online at www.madc.com.mt.
